I think that materials other than the farmed out parts and little touches here and there make up a great deal of the differnces. In general, RM uses lighter gauge brass in the bells and bows/branches of their instruments making them inherently feel a little different (more responsive, but lighter/brighter sound?) FYI, you are right about the subbed out parts. You can take parts from one and put them directly on the other brand (I've actually done this myself on the piston versions), particularly the valve set parts made by a supplier who shall remain nameless, although he now is being paid in pounds. =)
