As others have pointed out here (especially Rick "insert a phrase" Denny), the main thing has to do with the air flow/air pressure relationship. To many students play with way to much air pressure and not enough flow. It gets magnified on a big horn which then sounds like a laser tone. Mike Sanders put it right saying "Let the horn do the work." It is amazing sitting in an exhibit room seeing students going for the biggest horn but coming out with the smallest sound. It's not who's got the biggest tool but who uses it correctly.
