Then following this line of reasoning, who cares who's going to Boston!?! Someday, somebody will get selected to play in the orchestra, probably about the same time "the big dig" gets finished, and maybe about the same time a new home for the Red Sox gets started (with or without the green monster), and then we'll all know who that person is. With James Levine there, do we really care anyway? What becomes the point of this weekly, endless guessing of who's going?

Whether they get THE most qualified, greatest player for the job is really almost irrelevant. Symphony Hall has great acoustics, and the person they choose will probably sound very good in there, and will probably fit in just fine. Do you agree? So what if they're not Chester Schmitz - it'll be somebody else, and they'll have a sligtly different sound and style. And so it goes. Do you hear anyone making a big fuss over who's playing in S.F. and N.Y. these days? I don't.
