I agree. Don't "fall back" on a career in music education unless you are truely called to teach. There are a lot very frustrated, bitter music teachers out there turning off their students from music. My wife teaches in one of the largest disticts in Michigan and the stories she comes home with are unbelieveable. The lack of teaching going on in some schools is just amazing.
At many schools you can combine music with other subject. Music and business double major, music and engineering double major (UMich has a good progrm set up like this) and I'm sure there are others.
If later in life you are called to teach, you can always get certified.
