I have been doing a lot of research and hope to buy one within the next year. Everything I saw points to Sharp as being better than Sony. Virtually all the Sharps come with the ability to set a manual input level, which is much better than auto. I have also checked out the Sony mic specs and have not been impressed. They have a poor bottom end (rolloff at 100hz), so as not to overload the auto level control on the Sony recorders. There are a few other brands out there that are cheaper than the Sony and will go all the way down to the lowest audible frequencies (20hz).
www.minidisco.com has a lot of great stuff and info, also check out www.minidisc.ORG and www.sonicstudios.com
