Years ago, Al Hirt lost two teeth, due to an object thrown at him during Festival in New Orleans. Hirt had to re-learn his lip position, re-train muscles, reposition his mouthpiece. His comment: "Any cat can play any position if he works at it enough." Many a great horn player over the years has positioned his mouthpiece at a "strange" angle. But if it worked for Johnny Dodds, Coleman Hawkins, and others, it was the right placement for THEM. Watch Lee Trevino hit a golf ball during his hayday. Looked horrible...great results. Whatever WORKS FOR YOU is the "proper" position for your mouthpiece.
