I'm in the same boat; I also have developed good double-tongue technique. As long as you can get your double-tongue articulation to be indistinguishable from your single-tongue articulation, there should be no problem.
As for speed exercises, I've started with just two in a row...TUTU. TUTU. TUTU. As fast as possible. THen three...TUTUTU. TUTUTU. Sometimes the metronome shouldn't be used until later, after you can do just a few in a row lickety-split.
