Our quintet is working up a Christmas tune that has a bit of technical work from low Bb up to about Eb. The fingerings on the F are cumbersome, and so I pulled out the Miraphone to see if it would be a better choice while still maintaining a lighter sound. It was, but only for that lick. Everything else worked better with the little Yamaha.

Some quintets eschew tuba altogether and use a bass trombone, because they think the tuba sound is too fluffy to blend well with the other instruments. Some of the quintets we play even have the tuba part going above the trombone part. With the 621, I can avoid that fluffy sound. But if we are doing anything jazzy where the tuba part is a bass part, the fluffy sound is just what we need, so I find myself switching some these days also.
