I agree with Joe on this - perhaps you are just using 'way too much tongue mass when you are articulating. Try using less tissue where only the tip is touching the upper palate/gum area to block off the air. The less mass you are moving the less muscle tension is required to get the articulation happening - less tension means more movement and a faster stroke.

One of the things I do when I play (and it serves two purposes) is to only lift the tongue into position. Many people lift it up then (using muscles) pull it down. What I prefer to do in some cases is to lift the tongue up, then just relax it and let the air blow it out of the way - 1/2 the muscle use, no conflicting muscle contractions (which adds tension and slows speed), and it makes sure that your air is behind the tongue where it belongs and not hiding somewhere farther back.
