Oh wait, I've actually had a band director do that, too. That is, we'd be going along just fine, and he would screw up and stop us.
The gripe is that he wouldn't ever admit his mistakes. I've had others say right away, "Sorry, that was me," and all would be forgiven. HOWEVER, this guy would usually fabricate a reason for stopping, and we would all see right through it.
I think it comes from a certain school of thought for conductors, unfortunately. It's frustrating, and frankly, attempting to deceive an ensemble is never a good way to keep things happy.
