I've done this for blues material. If I know a tune on the bass, its very easy for me to transfer that to the tuba, of course when I play the blues on tuba, I more hear a bass in my head, and play the notes that pop out of my head. I've played the tuba much longer than the bass, and have actually drawn from the tuba, to the bass at times, and had good results also. For me it is more of a style thing. I know when people improv, many like to use certain instruments as models, whether it be saxophone (coltrane, redman ect...), trumpet (davis), or even violin (grapelli) to establish a concept.

Sorry maybe this is a little off topic from what you meant.
