"Tuba is a fine instrument to learn but it's hard to maintain interest in any instrument unless you have a regular performance." These words are true even in the adult world, however they are much more true in the world of a youngster. We all need a regular means of performing. Although the tuba can, and does, perform solos, it is very much at home in the ensemble world. I believe it is where most of us fall in love with its sound. We enjoy the role it plays. We don't often get much credit for what we do, but what we do makes a huge difference in an ensemble's sound. It is also much easier to get positive feedback, early, when performing in an ensemble. That positive feedback can be vital to an aspiring young tuba player.

If performing in the school band is an option, and I believe it is, then get original poster should get his son involved as soon as possible.
