As part of yesterday's Foothill College (Los Altos, CA) Band concert we performed Robt. Russell Bennett's "Suite of Old American Dances." It struck me that the tuba part is one of the most rewarding to play, in the band repertoire. I would suggest that any band director with a bored tuba player or a student complaining of less-than-challenging tuba parts, might want to consider programming this work, or, al least, putting it in the folder for reading purposes (assuming, of course, you have the players to make a go of it.)

I was the one who had suggested programming this work; on the way home, after the concert, my wife said, "Boy, I can see why you wanted to play that piece!"
