I might have heard of an errant tuba player in the mid-'70's who grabbed one of those aluminum string basses about 1:30 in the morning, duct-taped the F-holes air-tight, tossed it in the lake upside-down, straddled the bass, paddled across the lake, and swam back leaving the bass on the opposite shore...because swimming without the bass was easier than paddling with it.
