It's going to be hard to beat brass for workability and economy when it comes to making tubas. I'd hate to think about the problems of disassembly and assembly with aluminum instruments, much less doing a good job of removing a dent from aluminum.

That being said, a modular approach is practical, witness fiberglass souaphones, Glassl concert tubas and Daellenbach's carbon fiber bell. But all of these are inferior to all-brass instruments, so they're aiming at a niche market.

So brass it is, for as far as I can see ahead. I'm more concerned about survival of the tuba as a non-obsolescent instrument.
