For once I'm going to say it's the tuba, not the player. I have an old 3-valve Eb that just blasts out the false tones, in tune even....I think I remember (I havent' played it in a while) that the really good false tone is a tritone between the fundamental and the octave up from that. I just start fingerging down from the false tone and get a clear, loud bass all the way to the fundamental. This is a piston Eb, BTW.
ON my rotaries....I haven't tried all that hard to find false tones, but they don't seem to "be there" like on this little piston. Since I can do the false tone so easily on the piston, it is "not me" but the instrument that "likes" to play false tones.
I say....whatever you can play most easily and best in tune, is the way to go. If someone accuses you of being lazy, I'd say that someone is probably jealous.
