You may not realize this, but this question gets asked nearly every time someone offers a great tuba for sale. You're just the latest in a long line of questioners, so don't take this personally.

It just doesn't matter why the guy wants to sell it. It's either a great tuba or not for you, whether ot not it's a great tuba for him. The only way you'll know is to try it out. So, his opinion isn't even necessarily relevant, even assuming he tells you how he really feels about it (which he is not obligated to do). If you would like it, send him an email and arrange to go see it. Bring your checkbook in case you have to have it.

The only reason for selling anything is that the guy would rather have the money than the item. No further explanations are necessary, and some are even nosy.
