Well, I will give a stab at an explanation, sorry if anyone finds inconsistencies in it. The difficulty in telling the size of a tuba for starters is that Every Manufacturer has their own system. So trying to compare the horns between makers is very difficult if you are going to use the x/4 designation. If you look at meinl weston, they have the 2145, 2155 and 2165 which are 4/4, 5/4, and 6/4 respectively, so in that case it works and makes sense. But then compare one of those horns to say a conn or besson, or etc... you get the drift. This is the best explanation I can think of, since bell size or bore size dont seem to really be consistent (i.e. conn 56J) in telling the "size " of horn. But I guess in the end the only thing that matters is that you are happy with your horn and the way it plays.
