Pit-wear is another topic. Sometime, pits (in old circuit theatre houses) are filthy. Further, they are often hot. Often the out-of-town show hiring the musicians (Broadway show) will say "Wear BLACK...ALL black...NO formal wear."
The Broadway conductors really desire that no visual attention whatsoever be drawn to the pit.
