As a booking agent for some small churches in the backwater areas, I have tried to adhere to your guidelines. What I run into is men who only own a suit, and no tux.
I believe you posted on this particular subject before, but I wish to help kill the notion that A BLACK SUIT IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR A TUX.
I have seen too many performers from good regional schools wear the black single or double brested jacket, pleated shirt, and bowtie. This is often accompanied by a black pair of slacks that did not come with the aforementioned jacket as a set.
I have used the after dark rule for setting attire, but 6:00 is probably more appropriate.
