Of all the responses I read, I have to mildly disagree with yours. Since this is something that you say happens "regularly," I would have a hard time doing something that "really sounds crappy", "regularly." Perhaps you could talk to the choir director or spend some time with the hymnals or chorus books and work out an acceptable bassline. I have found that most church musicians just don't understand tuba. And, unfortunately, the harmonies of the newer generation charts that don't have a 3rd bone or tuba part in them usually don't lend themselves to being played down, as you have already found out.

I hope you appreciate my input the way I have appreciated everyone's here in this thread, I am not looking to start an all out argument
