Most tubas on the market seem to have at least one incredibly stupid design flaw suggesting that the designer was not a tubist and perhaps not even a rational person.
The bells are usually either far too big or too small; the valve cap positions rarely conform to any known human hand, and in recent years the parts most likely to get dents are unprotected.
I personally prefer front-action piston tubas, but they almost always have tight bends in the valve tubing in places that are sure to collect water, such as the lower curve in the first valve tubing. There is absolutely no need for that. A larger-radius bend is much less sensitive to water accumulation, and is probably easier to manufacture. Correcting that stupid mistake would be SO easy! If manufacturers can't even make a simple improvement like that, how can we ever hope for radical changes like the ones you suggest?
