...is just a bent, large bore version of a valved contrabass trombone. The Vienna State Opera used a six valve "unbent cimbasso" as their contrabass trombone on the famous Solti/Vienna Ring Cycle recorded in the 60's. It is so front heavy that the player will hang the end of it from another music stand in front of him. It's my understanding that the orchestra has owned this instrument since the 1920's. Same basic instrument as the production models made today by Meinl-Weston, Rudi Meinl, Thein, Laetsch, Haag, Vogt, Kalison, and others.
