Our quintet in High School made a slightly more judicious decision--we played without a French Horn (but a tbone on the horn part and a euph on the tbone part). Sounded pretty good, actually, our tbone player spiced up the horn part enough to make it interesting (seems like most quintet arrangements have terribly dull horn parts).
Of course, if the Navy guy had been playing a BBb contrabass trombone, that might be impressive enough to excuse ;-)
