When I studied with Ed Anderson at Indiana University (I'm a bass trombone lurker here), he described the audition as an "solo orchestral recital". Prepare the music to sound the absolute best BY YOURSELF. Make all the period stuff sound stylistically correct, and hit the right emotional levels that the music dictates, but in a way that will sound under controll. Performance dynamics with a group, versus at an audition are two different things.
