A lesson that I'm quickly learning is that breathing at the right spots in the music greatly enhances the overall effect. It makes the musical line "breathe," and not just the player. However, if you're running out of air in these passages I think you HAVE to find the perfect place to take a breath to make the music complete.

Chances are it's probably loud enough with everything else going on in the score that you can sneak some breaths that aren't necessarily marked and no one will notice. As long as it's done quickly and efficiently at an ideal spot where there will not be gaping hole in the music then go right ahead and make that decision.

As for breathing through the nose, it's perfectly legitimate. I've seen Roger Bobo use this to perfection and that's good enough for me to say it's OK.
