I've never had too much of a problem with ingrown hairs but I have an extremely coarse beard. I used to have a moustache but the hair was so coarse that I had no low range whatsoever. When I shaved it off I had low range for days. It was great. Now I have to shave using special creams and razors to get the "feel" that is most comfortable for when I'm playing. I suggest that you do what you need to, to get them to go away and then look at some changes in your shaving items.
I use Clinique Cream Shave, followed by their Turnaround lotion. I also use Gillette Good News Micro trak razors. I've beeen doing this for years and years (using Noxema Cream Shave before they took it off the market) and cannot remember when I last had a problem of this type. You won't believe how smooth it feels until you've tried it. I feel it helps my playing because I don't get my 5:00PM shadow until about 10:30PM now.

Hope this helps. Good luck with this problem.
