Excellent topic! I think it affects all of us. I've found that it is normally counter-productive for me to try to practice when fatigued; I'll actually play better if I rest or engage in recreation instead. We all need to critically listen to become better players, but overanalysis can be a cruel punishment. I think that many players bring undue stress on themselves, and we're learning that stress can kill. A realistic outlook and a sense of humor in combination with diligent practice can make one a happier and more consistent tuba player. A bass trombonist told me, "I'm so glad I'm a musician and not an air traffic controller- if I miss a note, it doesn't kill 250 people!" That's my $.02
