I'm also a tuba player living in Iowa City. Presently principal tuba in the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. I have purchased two horns within the last year. There is no place locally to demo instruments, other than asking local players if you can try out their horns. West Music does not stock tubas, nor does Music Loft in Cedar Rapids. That was a big problem for me, too. If you can drive to the Brasswind in South Bend, Indiana that's where you'll find the finest variety of horns to try out. I have purchased from them and I also bought a horn from Baltimore Brass Co. which, of course, is long distance, but they are great to work with - highly recommended. Good luck. If you ever find yourself looking for a band home give me a call. EIBB is presently looking for tuba players.
