The question wasn't how the valves work but rather when and/or how much you use the fifth valve. For instance, if you had a fast run to play in which a fifth valve fingering was an option for one of the notes would you use it or would you use a three or four valve fingering and assume nobody would hear the intonation error? I will occasionally opt for a three instead of fourth valve fingering to facilitate a smoother sound. The old pinky never seems to be equal to the other three.
