If those definitions are true, then Mahler and Stowkawski (sp?) were very self indulgent as conductors. I think breaking away from the status quo can often add freshness to music and sometimes make it available to a wider or different audience. ex. Bach's Tocatta&Fugue Dm in the original Fantasia scored by Stowkawski. (And selfishly, I just wish Mahler's 'self indulgent' arrangement of Beethoven 9, which has a tuba part scored in it, would be programmed more often). If conductors did not inject themselves, then we would only need one orchestra to make a recording, once.
Just a comment, I am not wearing my fireproof underwear today. :)
