Horn plays flat? Two possible causes. 1) Air leaks. Check all water keys, grease slide tubing, broken solder joints, and lastly check to see if the valves are leaky (you did say old horns) by trying a heavy oil on them to see if the pitch goes up and it plays better.
2) Too much tubing. In the horn or in the mouthpiece, oo much is just that. Try different mpcs, but if you still don't have some slide pull, you will need to cut the main tuning slide so you can push in for the sharp tuning situations.
