I will never sit on a military band audition committee, but imagining myself there, I think that I would prefer to hear the Finale-Rondo of the V.W., or the Gregson. If a "big" horn, there might be a better chance of playing the Gregson clean and light than the V.W. Have you considered "soloing" on a "solo" instrument and sight-reading on your "big" instrument?
Is this a D.C. job or a boondocks job? Either way, you will be obligated to outshine your competitors, so select your solo piece very carefully and work on it with extreme diligence and for extreme detail.
