Maybe this is a special case, but the first tuba I ever owned was sold to me by Arnold Jacobs, and over the years I bought two more from him, AND, (would you believe it?) an early, possibly the first, Schilke adjustable mouthpiece. I don't think it made him the least bit uncomfortable to sell equipment to me or anyone else, and it was understood he was taking a commission, that this the real world, and this was business. He practiclly said as much. Still, I had the utmost confidence his price was reasonable, and that he would never sell me anything unsuitable to my needs or abilities in order to "make a buck." I would hope that anyone today seriously engaged in the profession would be just as ethical, and TRUST their own ethics as Mr. Jacobs did in this regard.
