For the car, a mouthpiece works. I have many friends to think it's a hoot to see a battered tuba mouthpiece in the car. And you can throw one in your suitcase, too.
But I spend my time in my car in another way, too. I listen to music. Sometimes it's tuba stuff, but mostly it's ensemble stuff. I never studied music, but I'd bet I've heard nearly as much as many who have. Those sounds give me something to shoot for.
