Dopey Dog,
I must disagree with you. I have used the stock plastic ring on my Rudolf Meinl tubas for 20 years, and they are there for two purposes. They provide significant protection for the bell rim, and they significantly cut the percentage of high frequencies within any given pitch on the horn. I find that I can get a larger, darker sound with less of the annoying 'edge'. In fact, I made rings for the Conn sousaphone I use outside, and the Conn 34J I now use in many concert situations, and the effect is even greater on the larger (24") bell flares. This is a simple modification to the instrument to enhance my performance, and no one that has ever heard the results could criticize it.
