When I got accepted into schools, back in 89, I was offerred Manhattan School of Music with just a little financial help, or Mannes (small conservatory, one orchestra back then) at near full scholarship. I chose Manhattan, and got plenty of Wind Ensemble, some Jazz and even some commercial style exposure in addition to orchestra during my one year there. Since I don't make a living as an orchestral tubist (or even as a full time musician right now), I think my experiences there probably helped me more than one at a Mahler - Tchaikovsky - Stravinsky only conservatory. Also, Toby Hanks is a great teacher and great guy.

Just food for thought, and a plug for Manhattan.

I am not slamming anyone's schools, Mannes is GREAT at what they do, and in all honesty I probably would have gone to Juilliard had they accepted me then.
