Opinion: sousaphones are the only way to go for bands. Blending with the other bugles in a drum corps, you can make a great case for the shoulder-carried contras, but for a band setting a BRASS CONN or KING sousaphone is about the best sound you could ask for. It can have the same hair-parting blowing power as the contra, but it can also offer a wonderfully mellow and plush sound.

If it's a choice between a convertible or a fiberglass sousaphone, IMHO, that's different; but if you really get to decide what you want, get a fleet of Conns.
