Military Bands

I really should combine posts:

I'm sort of responding to the
"orchestral tuba" thread, but this
doesn't really have to do with
orchestral tubas. I'm a french horn
military musician.

I'm in a military band and not once have
I saluted my conductor. I did salute
one of the other officers in my band
and he told me not to do it. He said
it made him feel silly.

When I saluted him, he waved back at
me.

I'm glad I'm in the military now. I
have to work out otherwise I won't pass
the PT test (i can't run to literally
save my life) and now, I feel great and
look forward to my 40 min of work out
at the gym 3 times a week.

If i wasn't working out, I'd probably
be about 15 pounds heavier and feel
like mush.

As a member of the band, I have tons
of free time; I only worked about
4 hours this week on the job, and
I can practice 4 hours a day, at home,
in front of my favorite TV shows.

Then, I can go to various concerts
and go downtown to the cool museums.

The thing about boot camp? I had fun
pretending to be a soldier/sailor, got
to play games with all of the teenagers,
and got in shape. Boot camp is as tough
as you make it. I made it through with
a few bruises and sore muscles.

I got an "outstanding" on my final PT exam,
and I'm 58" tall and about 105 lbs.
If *I* can do it, anyone can.

One other thing, the best things about
doing ceremonies/concerts is the "stupid"
stuff that happens. You guys that
are in the military bands have to know
what I'm talking about. You know, when
funerals "go bad" I should write a book on it :).
