Many mistakes are made at auditions even for the top level orchestras. Auditions are not lost because of a few missed notes. Auditions are lost because many candidates auditioning for the job do not play to high MUSICAL standards.
You are right, most people don’t miss many notes. MOST play mono dynamically (all loud), bad intonation, wrong rhythms (especially the Ride) and with uneven unrefined sounds. MOST candidates play as though they have never heard any of this music before.

If you think the standard is high for tuba players realize that the standards for string players is tenfold! Most symphony orchestra audition committees include string players. You have to strive for their level of preparation,refinment and musicianship.
