If things haven't improved significantly by your audition time, consult your physician about applying a protective coating over the sore. I use something called Zilactin (available OTC) on canker sores. It's sort of a varnish, and does nothing medically for the sores, except to provide a coating to make them less sensitive. Depending on the location and severity of your sore, this might be enough to see you through. It contains no painkillers but the alcohol base does make the initial application sting like Hades. I'd view this as being strictly a last-ditch measure.
