Well Cheryl there's a female professional tubist just about in your backyard. Carla Rutchsman (sp?) is the tuba instructor at Western Washington Universtity in Bellingham.
I was going through some old TUBA journals and saw an old ad for Conn tubas from the 20s and they showed a female professional tubist that used the largest Conn recording bass that was being made at that. So although rare, female tubists have been around for quite some time.
