We were "building" a recording studio many years ago, and we tested the consistency of a room by playing pink noise over the monitors and walking around the room. The phase shifts and changes in tonality as we moved around the room were stunning. Yes, 12 inches can have a profound effect.

There's a trick in the oval-shaped original Senate meeting room in the U.S. Capitol. There is a place on one side where you can hear whispers from the other side of the room. The sweet spot is only about two or three feet wide in a room that is well over 100 feet wide.
