A trip to a garage sale, carpet store or Goodwill should net you a hunk of carpeting for a few bucks that you can mangle to adjust for the right amount of liveliness to the sound. I.e., if the sound is too "dead", just get out your utility knife and whack off a hunk. If after your experimenting, looks are a primary concern, you can get a cheapie good-looking rug of the right size.

Or you can have your basement flocked...

Sometimes a room with really good acoustics can be a mixed blessing. On the negative side, it can lull you into believing that your sound is better than it really is. On the positive side, it's great for selling tubas--right, Rick?
