I have owned a Sanders BBb tuba bought from Custom in 1970(for the princely sum of
$950.00). Sanders at that time were made by Scherzer(of current rotary valve trumpet
fame). This instrument was VASTLY superior to the Amati/Cervany and Pacific Rim toss
offs currently offered under this brand name. My old Sanders was also inscribed with
the name "Jos. Scherzer, Jr.". It was a large 4/4 almost a 5/4 size instrument. Standard
Kraslitz layout with 4 rotary valves. Made like a TANK...had some airlines damage early
on, instrument tech couldn't hammer out dents because metal so thick. Neal Tidwell plays
a 4/4 CC from same vintage(he used to be featured on Custom ads/brochures). Joe S. had
modified a classmate's horn of same vintage with updated open spiral linkages/paddles.
These older instruments are completely different from the Sanders sold by Custom today. RB
