Eric, welcome to the wonderful world of Rudy tubas. It's smart to play many different horns and as you pointed out you leaned toward a tuba with the SOUND you like. Sound is 90% of what I look for in a horn. Oh, responsiveness and other factors are very important but I've played horns that cost $7000 more and can't hold a candle to my Rudy 5/4 CC. Find some used horns and give them a try. I'm in central p.a. and I always have the time for someone who wants to try out my horn. By the way, the very low register on my horn is a little nebulous too. I just found a mouthpiece that gives me more oommph down there and produces a warmer sound than my Bach 7. It's a Dillon/Sheridan 01. It has a larger backbore and is meant for larger CC BBb tubas. Good Luck to you.
