I agree with Sean on the musical effects. Whatever musical difference it makes is beyond my hearing to detect.

But I prefer raw brass instruments. When they are polished and freshly lacquered, horns are pretty. But they really acquire character when left raw and they achieve a uniform brown color. Both look like they were done that way on purpose. Once you wear a few holes through the lacquer, you'll get a horn with that high polish in some places and dull brown in others, and that looks to the casual observor like poor care.

And having no lacquer greatly minimizes the work faced by a technician doing repairs to your horn. In the end, this is the characteristic that most appeals to me.

Granted, my opinion would likely be different if my hands turned green every time I played the horn.
