Silver USED to be CHEAP. Garsh, they even made COINS out of them! (Imagine that.)
I once sold a formerly-silver sousaphone on which the bell was actually made out of rough, unsanded brass. They simply piled TONS of silver plating over the rough brass until it was smooth enough to sand blast.
Sand blasting a sousa takes all day to sand blast it (including the masking job) and day ahead of that to do the "cut down" polishing and the "high gloss" polishing on the "bright" areas, whereas a complete bright buffing one might take two full days, so the time is about equal.
