I would recommend a Miraphone 186S, VMI 2103, or Meinl-Weston 25. These
are all 4/4 BBb horns with 4 rotary valves and medium-large bore sizes(.750-.770).
All are in the $3000.-$4,000. range. I would seek them at Brook Mays Music/Charlie
Krause, Woodwind and Brasswind/Mike Russo, Dillon Music/Matt Walters, and Baltimore
Brass/Dave Fedderly(esp. re MW 25's he has on clearance sale). These are all German
tubas that are all well-made and will last(with care) as long as your son needs(till
college and then CC and F tubas). Good Luck!
