We used big ballons (3-4 feet across) filled with Hydrogen (might've been Helium, but I doubt it) on an indoors concert one year, and one of those really long lighters (like the kind you use for a grill) to burst them. They lined up about 20 of these things in the balcony and set them off right on cue. The flash was a bit distracting, but it had a very loud and deep sound and worked really well. Other indoor concerts just used a really big drum, like 6' across.
